Back in '86
The first Gunther Toody's opened in Colorado Springs in 1986 with a simple idea: bring the rock 'n' roll spirit of the 1950s back to life — chrome trim, a jukebox that never quits, and booths built for regulars. It caught on fast. Within a few years there were diners on the Front Range from Colorado Springs up through Denver's northern suburbs, and the family that opened the first one was still running the ones that followed.
Forty years later, that hasn't changed. Gunther Toody's is still a family owned restaurant in Colorado, not a franchise — the same people who grew up in these diners are the ones who run them today, which is a big part of why a Gunther Toody's in Northglenn still feels like the Gunther Toody's you remember from Colorado Springs, even though no two rooms are decorated quite the same.
Our old TV spot
This ran on Denver television about twenty years ago, and we have never had the heart to throw it out. The film is grainy, the haircuts have dated and the jingle will follow you around for the rest of the afternoon — but the checkerboard floor, the neon and the jukebox in it are the same ones you will walk into this week.
That is the whole argument for a family-owned diner in one 34-second clip: we did not adopt the 1950s look because it tested well. We have been doing this long enough to have the old commercials to prove it.
What scratch-made actually means here
"Scratch-made" gets used loosely by a lot of restaurants. Here it means the burgers are 100% USDA Prime beef, the chicken tenders are hand-breaded in house rather than shipped in frozen, the shakes are hand-spun with premium ice cream rather than pulled from a soft-serve machine, and breakfast — real breakfast, not a limited weekend version of it — runs all day, every day. It is slower than the alternative. It is also why regulars keep ordering the same thing for thirty years.
The home of legendary birthdays
Birthdays at Gunther Toody's get the full '50s treatment: a booth by the jukebox, the checkerboard and neon doing their thing, and a free birthday dessert the team makes a real occasion of. It's a house tradition that's been running almost as long as the diners have — for kids' parties and grown-up milestone birthdays alike.
